Signature Events

Signature events bring together national and international experts to learn from best practices across jurisdictions. The participants work together to solve pressing quality challenges in Ontario’s cancer system. The result of each event is a synthesis paper of policy recommendations and proceedings for addressing the challenges.

 

The events help shape strategic directions at Cancer Care Ontario. They also lead to best practices that improve the cancer system in the province. The first event was held in 2003.

Sustainable Cancer Care: Strengthening the System for Future Generations

Event Year: 2016

Who Attended

Provincial, national and international experts in value and sustainability

Discussion Focus

Participants provided feedback to Cancer Care Ontario on a draft Framework for Value for Money. Their feedback included suggestions on how to apply the framework in Ontario’s cancer system. They also discussed how to engage and support patients, providers and the public in decisions and conversations about sustainability and value.

Objectives

  • Review best practices and innovations in sustainability and value based on evidence.
  • Learn from other jurisdictions about how they:
    • assess value and cost of care
    • support communication among patients and providers to improve system sustainability
  • Provide recommendations to Cancer Care Ontario on practical solutions to support and improve system sustainability.

Outcome

  • Refined Framework for Value for Money
  • Exploratory research on costing episodes of care

    Collaborate to Activate: Empowering Patients and Providers for Improved Self-Management

    Event Year: 2015

    Who Attended

    Provincial, national and international experts in patient activation and self-management

    Discussion Focus

    Participants discussed setting priorities for improving patient knowledge, skill and confidence to manage their own healthcare. They also heard about innovations in technology, and best practices for patient activation and self-management.

    Objectives

    • Learn best practices from other jurisdictions that have adopted and implemented a self- management program.
    • Receive feedback on Cancer Care Ontario’s Framework for Self-Management Education for Cancer Patients.
    • Examine how we can implement self-management and patient empowerment.
    • Provide practical solutions and recommend to Cancer Care Ontario ways to improve the quality of health service delivery in Ontario.

    Outcome

    • Formed provincial steering committee and program standards

    Safety is Quality: Strengthening the Culture of Patient Safety in Ontario’s Cancer System for Improved Patient Care

    Event Year: 2014

    Who Attended

    Provincial, national and international experts in patient safety

    Discussion Focus

    Participants discussed improving the culture of patient safety in cancer care. This included how to avoid and prevent negative outcomes and injuries along the cancer continuum to improve every patient’s experience.

    Objectives

    • Discuss opportunities to create a culture of safety within the cancer system, and address safety for care in the home and community for cancer patients.
    • Discuss promising and practical solutions from international and local jurisdictions to deal with patient safety.
    • Discuss the role of Cancer Care Ontario in providing safe care to patients. This includes quality improvement reporting, and providing tools to make sure care is safe, effective and patient-centred.

    Outcomes

    • Development of a system safety report
    • Framework for assessing safety risks across the cancer continuum

      Walk the Talk: Removing Barriers to Cancer Care for All

      Event Year: 2013

      Who Attended

      Provincial, national and international experts in addressing health inequities

      Discussion Focus

      Participants discussed promising and practical solutions from jurisdictions and health system organizations. This included solutions that reduce health inequities and can be applied to cancer care.

      Objectives

      • Discuss solutions that reduce inequities, with strategies to overcome barriers such as income, distance, education, age, sex, culture, disability and other disparities.
      • Discuss models for community partnerships to seamlessly connect the cancer system to the community where patients are.
      • Discuss the role of the system and provider in providing equitable care to patients. This includes measures and tools to make sure treatment is safe and effective for all patients in a person-centred environment.

      Outcome

      • Prioritization of equity in Cancer Care Ontario’s fourth Ontario Cancer Plan

        Align, Bridge, Collaborate: Strengthening Primary and Specialist Care Links for Seamless Patient Care

        Event Year: 2012

        Who Attended

        International and provincial experts in primary care integration

        Discussion Focus

        Participants discussed ways to improve transition points across the care continuum for those with cancer, kidney disease and other chronic diseases. They also discussed how to encourage continual involvement of healthcare providers in the gap between primary and specialist care for seamless patient care. 

        Objectives

        Discuss proven and practical solutions from international jurisdictions to improve care for people with cancer, kidney disease and other chronic diseases. Topics discussed included:

        • promoting prevention and early detection of chronic diseases and chronic disease management
        • encouraging better coordination and continuity of care within the primary care sector, and between primary care and other sectors for the best management of patients
        • improving transition points in the care continuum
        • encouraging continual involvement of healthcare providers in the gap between primary and specialist care throughout the care continuum

        Outcome

        • Established a Primary Care Centre of Practice
